Teacher Librarian of the Year

Darla Castillo

Congratulations to Darla Castillo of Roosevelt Elementary School, who has been awarded the 2024 Teacher Librarian of the Year Award by the Long Beach School Librarians Association.

Castillo has been a teacher librarian for 13 years, nine of which have been with the Long Beach Unified School District. She currently serves as the librarian for Roosevelt Elementary School.

Throughout her career, Castillo has worked in middle and elementary school libraries and has written multiple successful grants for her libraries, including the Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries Grant in 2015. Currently, Castillo is working to achieve the National Board Certification for Library Media Specialists. 

This year, with help from her family, she processed over 9,000 books for 菠菜网lol正规平台 elementary and K-8 sites. Thanks to her efforts, all elementary and K-8 schools received a set of Conscience Kids books, showcasing diversity and inclusion, more than a year ahead of schedule.
